I'm a little claustrophobic. Should I avoid the lower canyon?

I'm sorry. We were in the upper canyon. I am not sure about the lower canyon. My wife is claustrophobic but the upper canyon didn't bother her. You may want to tour it instead.
How difficult are the stairs in the canyon. Some have said really steep and others have said not so bad. I am a little nervous about them.

Hard to answer. It depends on an individual's mobility. As 78 year olds, my wife and I had no problem. Just use the handrails. We didn't see anyone turn around or get stuck. If you can go up and down a set of stairs in a building, you probably won't have any problems in/out of the canyon.
