I honestly do not remember if I bought them on the train or in advance. We started just inside the lower main city gate, and there was signage about a stop. They do not "sell out", and so just buy them when you want to go. Tickets are good for the day. The shop owners are super helpful, compared to some other tourist cities, and just ask a shop owner near one of the well signed designated stops about how to buy tickets. I would think that many people ask every day. Once boarding the train, there is a driver and a second helper, who will give you disposable earbuds after seeing that you have paid. It really is easy, and so don't worry about advance reservations or purchase.
