Where were you standing when you saw the sunrise over the Temple Mount? Was the sun at your back, or were you facing it, or maybe neither? I wondered about starting at the Church of Mary Magdalene and walking towards Lion's Gate while watching, rather than standing in one spot. Is this feasible? Final question, The Holy Sepulchre opens at 5 am. I wonder if there already lines forming at that time - see the sunrise from there, then go in line around 5:35 am once the sun is up. Were you ever in this area early in the morning? I've been obsessed trying to get answers to these questions since I read your post about 6 months ago, and only now discovered I am able to contact you! I so much appreciate your post. I've set my entire agenda around it! Thanks. Over the years you've probably been inundated with this type of question.

I can’t answer the detail of your question as we visited the Mount of Olives around 10 in the morning so, as you can imagine, the sun was shining. We did progress through the various sites as you suggest ending up at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Whilst it is quite a walk there are places to see on the way. We would have ended up at the Holy Sep…… around early afternoon. Whilst there was queues they were manageable. Enjoy
Can you walk to the Mount of Olives from the Old City?
答:
Yes! You can! just exit the Old City through the Lions Gate, walk along the road to the Mary's Tomb and climb the road in front of it. 20 mins by feet to reach tha top of the Olives' Mount! Enjoy!
We will be in Jerusalem on Sat., Dec. 22, 2018, and need an early morning tour of the Mount of Olives site. Most tours appear to be in afternoon. Can anyone please suggest an early morning tour. Thanks!

I went with On the Go so not on a separate tour but I am sure you should be able to get a morning tour

There is no charge to visit the mountain itself. Most of the Holy Sites are free although the clergy who run them would be grateful for a donation. There are donation boxes at the rear of all churches. A few sites such as the Pater Noster (Lord's Prayer) charge a small entrance fee.
