Designated as a National Historic Site and a State Historic Park in 1962, the remains of Bodie are being preserved in a state of "arrested decay." Today this once thriving mining camp is visited by tourists who continue to travel to Bodie from all over the world, just as they did back in Bodie's boom years.

I drive a hired mustang not 4 x 4 and was fine and saw camper vans drive it. The first part is tarmac normal road the last 2 miles is dirt track but flattened with the odd bump or pit hole that was easy to swerve.... it really wasn’t a problem and this may sound silly but it built up the anticipation and authenticity of it in a way.... don’t let it stop you
Are there any tour groups that give tours of Bodie? Really just trying to avoid taking a rental car over the dirt road.

The shorter of the two dirt roads is fine did it on the way in with a rental car. The long route we took out was pretty bumpy but still easily passable. Just take your time.
