As the glint of the landing lights on the private jet emerged from the thick Aberdeen clouds, it was the beginning of a long goodbye for Alex Salmond.

It was a sight to behold as Salmond's coffin, draped in the saltire for his return journey home, was greeted by children, pipers and even dogs - dressed to fit the occasion.
