Italian outlets (and Swiss) are different sized. They accept a 4.0mm round plug, whereas France, Germany and most other northern European countries use a larger, 4.8mm round plug.

There are 3 principle types of plugs: 10 amp which uses a fatter prong, 10 amp which uses a thinnner prong, and schucko with a round plus holding two or three prongs.
