I have sailed on a Widgeon on several occations and they are nice little boats. They are lively enough to be fun to sail and docile enough that a reasonably physically fit adult should feel fairly safe in one.

A Ranger 23 is a great little boat, if you need. overnight accommodations. A Sonar would be fine for daysailing. A J22 is quicker, with modest accommodations.

While they are reasonably priced, have a good class association, and are widely used for racing in small clubs, I'm reluctant to endorse them strongly for your purposes. My chief gripe is that the hull design lacks static form stability.
