      A variety of applications in catalysis or (opto)electronic devices use α-Al 2 O 3 (0001) as substrate for growth or support of other materials. Because such applications sensitively depend on surface reactivity, our study suggests that that they require careful attention to sample preparation and the particular surface termination it produces.
