If you're talking about doing a complete playthrough, I can understand calling this the worst one - it's very clearly very rushed, and that shows most in the second half of the game.

WEBSep 15, 2024 · A 3D Mario that nobody talks about. People always say it's much better with the 3D effect so I haven't played it yet on my 2DS XL. But it's not like it didn't sell. It sold over 10m copies. Plenty of people have played it. Even if you want to say 3D World is a better version, aren't the levels quite different since one has to account for 4 players.

RTTP Super Mario 3D World - A slightly disappointing 3D platformer
WEBAug 25, 2024 · Its my favourite 3D Mario game. I disagree with 3D world having imprecise platforming. Actual tight platforming feels a lot better than in Odyssey. The camera and movement being somewhat fixed allows for better 2d mario style level design. I think it does a great job translating 2d Mario into 3D.

In a couple of weeks, it will be the 5th anniversary of Mario Odyssey; it's getting into new 3D Mario territory time, especially if you consider that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was released in 2010 and Odyssey was released in 2017 (and we also got 3D World in 2013).

Odyssey controls great but the raw platforming challenges are never as satisfying because Mario has so much freedom. 3D World forces you to work with Mario's more conservative moveset and allows for level design that can challenge the player more in that regard, though power-ups and alternate characters give you some wiggleroom.

But the only top tier 2D games are SMB3 and SMW, and maybe NSMBU + NSLU. Meanwhile you have Mario 64, the Galaxy games, 3D World, and Odyssey... 3D just has more heavy hitters.
