Phylogeny subsets - birdtree.org
This tool provides a simple way to produce distributions of trees with subsets of taxa. The upper limit for the tool is 2,500 species. If larger subsets ar required you can download full trees. The tool first trims to a subset, and then samples trees from a chosen pseudo-posterior distribution.
Methods - birdtree.org
We follow four steps: Each species is assigned to one of 158 clades; Relaxed-clock trees are generated for each clade; Species without genetic information are partially constrained within their clade based on a combination of consensus trees from step 2 and taxonomic information.

Our species lists and taxonomic information is provided in Table S2. We updated the threat categories of the Birdlife V3 list with the 2012 assessment data (based on Birdlife V5; 225 species changed threat status compared to 2010).
