Ranger's don't become particularly good at anything without multiclassing. Here's an example of one of my favorite single class character builds, the Conquest Paladin. Hexblade is generally a good choice for multiclassing because it's rather front-loaded, one to three levels should be all you need. OTOH, you won't really get much out of the SAD benefit of the Hexblade.

Giant's Might, Extra Attack, Rune Shield, Runes, Action Surge, Extra ASI on level 6, then level 7 the strongest Runes and suddenly level 8- another ASI! 3 more levels and Extra Attack! It's packed.
