Dolby Surround old school will see this and move the audio to the center channel (in phase audio from left and right channels are routed to center). New Dolby surround expands the field so it processes it as a stereo field and expands it.

The new version of it branded simply Dolby Surround introduced in 2014 is entirely an Upmixer meant to utilize all available channels. the legacy Dolby Surround (pre-ProLogic in the analog world) would take a 2.0 channel stereo mix and extract a limited bandwidth monaural surround channel.
