The method is described in the first link below, and involves removing one linear polarizer layer from the 3D glasses, then placing them in front of the active 3D projected image to polarize the alternating left/right images.

This has been corrected by some very good passive 3D screens which are not riddled with the poor quality of silver screens with 2D material.
