2021年5月12日 · I use the maul as a wedge on the giant rounds and just pound it with the sledge. The x27 does 95% of the work though, I only use the maul/sledge when necessary. My wife who is 5'4 and 120 lbs actually prefers the maul...go figure! They have held up nicely even hitting all sorts of hidden metal, rocks, and driveway along the way.

2017年9月5日 · Good for normal splitting but I've gotten into plenty where the Stihl mauls far outdid the x27. Then again I don't mind swinging a maul, and off the top of my head I can't remember the weights of the Stihl but I don't think they are over 7lb.

2006年12月15日 · A blunt-edge splitting maul is better than one with a sharp edge. Yellow birch can be a real problem, but the clear-grained pieces are a joy to split. The only problem with YB is that it takes about 2 years to dry, vs. a good year for beech, maple, etc.

2005年12月19日 · A dull "maul" head on a log splitter might work well because it has tons of force splitting a log. Manually splitting with a maul works much better with a sharp maul...not razor sharp but not dull either. A sharp maul penetrates deeper into the wood for a better, easier split.

2014年4月11日 · After the 3rd of 4th round, the handle snapped. To this day, still on the original handle on the Stihl Pro Splitting Maul--and despite my mastery (sarcasm), I will mis-hit once in a while and the only thing that flies off is the chunk of wood from the round, and the maul just looks at me and says "Do it again, city boy!" I love my maul.

But when I bust up some rounds just to make them easier to handle in the woods, I prefer the fiberglass. I can abuse it without much worry. 2010年12月3日 · Good quality fiberglass maul. If you're new at splitting you'll save the time and expense of replacing wooden handles. Wood handles will also weaken and fail with time and usage. I've got a an 8lb fiberglass handled maul that's been laying around the barn in the elements for at least 15years and works like new.

2007年10月29日 · The maul with the red plastic guard on it was a cheap blunt unit. I was able to dramatically improve its performance by grinding the snot out of the head so that it wasn't quite so blunt. Having used the Fiskars, I'd say I improved the performance from 1 on a scale of 10 to at least 3 out of 10...
