  1. Swirling flows are widely used in many engineering applications. In combustion devices, they are often used to stabilize the flame by means of a recirculation zone. Swirling flows, however, are prone to instabilities which can trigger pronounced unsteadiness of combustion degrading the performance of the whole system.
