While there are MUCH more knowledgeable Byzantine fans on Reddit, it’s my understanding that the empire had TWO rulers over their respective establishments- the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the figurehead of all Orthodox Christianity and the head of the Greek Orthodox Church; then the Emperor who ruled the state.
