Four important things here: 1. Picking the right plants for the light conditions. This is full sun. 2. Not planting too close to the house. I suggested planting close to the edge of the rope and that shape can be moved out over time but it’s key not to set yourself up for constant pruning and other problems. Also notice the windows. Don’t plant something that’s going to get tall right in front of a window. More pruning. 3. Taking this in stages because it’s a lot of work to cover a whole area li

The ecological and economic impact of this plant in non-native territories can be devastating. Many people falsely compare targeted application of the herbicide glyphosate for these types of plants to broad and frequent spraying used in large-scale agriculture. They are not the same. For more information about best practices, read the Penn State or University of New Hampshire’s University Extension. It seems the recommendations surrounding chemical use include a 2-3% glyphosate solution. You can

Some real talk for beginner gardeners! This gardening journey is fulfilling, rewarding and oftentimes challenging. Just remember: The best gardeners have killed the most plants. You are going to kill some too. It’s part of the journey. And I am not kidding…plants flirt with you in the garden center! Keep calm, keep walking…you don’t need 9 rose bushes! #zone5 #zone5gardening #zone5b #zone5bgardening #garden #gardening #gardeningcommunity #gardeningishealing #gardeninglife #beginnergardener #gard

Light changes over time and usually it’s slow and steady. Removing limbs or branches can help but sometimes it’s just not enough and you may want to consider replacing them if they’re no longer getting enough light to thrive. While it may be sad to let them go there are a ton of beautiful shade plants to consider so try leaning in.🌿 Dramatic change from shade to sun is another topic for a future post and that can happen overnight with the removal of a large tree. Timing: you can take smaller br

I have recommended soil tests to clients only 4 times and this was one of them. (The fourth one was on the very same day!) If you are taking care of your soil, you should not need much or any fertilizer. Most clients I meet with are not taking care of their soil though, and for this I usually suggest compost and other organic matter. These are slow-release fertilizers. In both cases, compost or high quality top soil had been added to various areas and plants were still not thriving or even dying

As I learn more and more about native plants I am very compelled by the call to actively incorporate them into the landscape and to leave certain ones that are volunteering on their own. Native plants do better in our yards because they belong there. They are adapted to our respective regions so they require less maintenance and tending and they feed or provide habitat for local wildlife. This allows these species to stay where they are as opposed to seeking food elsewhere. This results in great

Not all honeysuckles are the same. Morrow’s honeysuckle (Lonicera morrowii) is an early-blooming shrub (yellow and white flowers) and it smells great. But it’s classified as invasive in many states, especially along the east coast. It can spread all over your property and beyond. We may like that because they smell nice but they can take over. In less cultivated areas (woods etc), it outcompetes native shrubs for light and other things, it spreads widely and then the species relying on those pla

Less lawn, more plants!😂 I did this a couple of days ago. I love expanding the garden areas but it’s quite a bit of physical work. I had planted a few things in this area but hadn’t yet adjusted the shape. I’ll keep adjusting as the shrubs get bigger (red osier red twig dogwood, ninebark and the ivory halo dogwood). I felt the area needed more variety in height and I’m also working to block the view of cars and a lot of gravel. There are a number of different ways to deal with grass and I’ve do

I frequently meet with people who over-extend with raised beds. They invest in them and then find they don’t have the time to manage them. This can result in a waste of time and money. In this case, my client Lindsey was very tuned into this and she wanted to approach this in a measured way. She wisely considered the potential for lead paint in the soil and plans to get a soil test before planting in this area. This is important when planning to grow anything you plan to eat if you’re planting t

More and more people are learning about how important it is to leave as much as we can over the winter to protect insects and other wildlife, and to wait until the weather is consistently warmer in the spring before cleaning everything up. Usually this is in the 50s Fahrenheit (~10 C). There’s so much information out there but it’s not one size fits all so do a little research about what’s best in your area and just do the best you can. A lot of people are worried about killing the grass. I don’

I usually plant my bulbs in late November. As long as the ground isn’t frozen you can get these in the ground so don’t worry about it if you haven’t gotten around to it yet. Just dig a hole, drop them in and press down. I do one bag at a time and each one usually has around 10. When I first posted something on this a while back people were incredulous that you don’t have to plant them one at a time or pointing up. They find a way. If you’ve never tried this before, go for it!🌷TIPS: I lay them o

You want a low maintenance garden? Try waiting until spring to do your cleanup. It’s nice to be lazy and it’s good for nature. (Example: fireflies!)This client lucked out because she inherited a garden with several areas that were carefully considered and there are a bunch of native plants on the property. She is busy and doesn’t have much time for gardening. This was the first thing she told me as we started walking around.(There is also plenty of opportunity for improvement and some overgrown

Many people worry about when to prune and this can be paralyzing. I hear this so often from clients. The reason I think this can be overwhelming for some is that flowering shrubs bloom at different times and it can be a lot to keep track of. Basic rule of thumb IF you want to optimize blooms: prune soon after flowering. This gives plants enough time to create new buds for the following season. This is for US, not the plant. The ideal time to prune for most plants is late winter/early spring but i

I get questions from clients all the time about which hydrangea they have and when to prune them every day. This is a confusing topic so you’re not alone if you are also confused! This is the old “wood”/new “wood” thing—meaning, if the plant forms buds in the late summer/fall for the NEXT year’s flowers, it’s on the “old” wood. This is the macrophylla species and all of its various types and bred types (cultivars). Don’t cut these stems unless you need to control for size, which I would do in the

Hello! I am a garden coach and a passionate gardener myself. I’m focused relentlessly on making gardening more fun and less intimidating. A lot can be accomplished by making small changes so if you feel overwhelmed, try to think of things in bite-sized pieces and take on little bits at a time. I’ve been gardening for about 30 years and I’ve made plenty of mistakes and that’s how we learn. However, some mistakes cost more than others and I want to help people avoid unnecessary ones. Welcome to Gardening Club. Every Thursday on the grid I’ll be encouraging you to create more interesting gardens. One of the easiest ways is through movement. We want our gardens to be full of plants so as the wind passes through they sway and dance in the breeze. Without this sense of movement gardens feel flat, uninteresting and static. Grasses are great for this as is euc, bamboo and thin leaved plants. As they say in the fitness world Motion is Lotion! #gardeningclub #gardendesign #gardenin

Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) can take down structures and rip siding right off of your house. I cannot tell you the number of properties I’ve visited where it has gotten totally out of control and spread all over the place. It is totally devastating and defeating. You cannot just wave a magic wand and make this stuff disappear. I’ve heard from countless people about their struggles and long-term efforts to get rid of it and I am so frustrated that this is available to purchase. (Nurserie

Japanese knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is taking over properties, wetlands, forests and other areas. It can cause major damage to foundations and septic systems and decrease the value of your property. It looks like bamboo but isn’t. It’s invasive in many parts of the US and other parts of the world. There are different ways to go about management and removal. I think the best way to attack it is to research best practices at University extension programs. I am not an expert but my understandin

Nope! I’m starting to get this question from clients in colder climates because people are worried about doing the wrong thing with these finicky plants. Understandable! The best thing to do with these macrophylla/big leaf hydrangeas is to leave them alone.Exceptions: dead stems, which I mentioned in the video, bent or broken stems, pruning to get cut flowers, and to control size if they are out of control or just too big for the space. Some people cut off the flowers but I usually don’t because

The panicle hydrangeas, like limelights, bobos, quickfires, etc, form their buds on the NEW growth each year (new “wood”). Pruning in spring stimulates new growth and protects the plants from extreme temperatures in the winter if you prune them in the fall, though they tend to be very hardy. They’re also nice to look at over the winter and they can provide some habitat for birds. If you need to prune them this fall because they will be in the way over the winter or you are worried about snow or
